The five-axis linkage CNC machine tool is ahigh-tech, high-precision, special-purpose machine tool for processing complexcurved surfaces. This machine tool system is significant for a country’saviation, aerospace, military, scientific research, precision equipment,high-precision medical equipment and so on. At present, the five-axis linkage CNC machine tool system is the onlyway to solve the processing of impellers, blades, marine propellers, heavygenerator rotors, steam turbine rotors, big diesel engine crankshafts etc.

Thereare two ways of rotary axis for the vertical five-axis machining center. One isthe table rotary axis. The table set on the bed can rotate around the X axis,which is defined as the A axis. The general working range of A axis is +30degrees to- 120 degrees. Another rotary table in the middle of worktable, whichrotates around the Z axis at the position shown in the figure, is defined as Caxis, it is 360 degree rotation.
In this way, with the combination of A axis and X axis, the workpiecefixed on the table can be processed by the vertical chief axis except thebottom surface. The minimum division value of the A-axis and C-axis isgenerally 0.001 degrees, so that the workpiece can be subdivided into anyangle, inclined surface and inclined holes can be processed. If the A-axis andC-axis are linked with the three linear XYZ axes, then, the complex spatialcurved surfaces can be processed. Of course, this requires high-end CNC systems,servo systems and software support. The advantage of this arrangement is thatthe structure of the chief axis is simple, the rigidity of chief axis is verygood but with low manufacturing cost. However, the general worktable can not bedesigned too big, as the load-bearing is small, especially when the rotation ofA axis is larger than or equal to 90 degrees, it will bring great load to theworktable during workpiece cutting.
Another type is thereturn-axis which relies on the vertical spindle head, the front end of thespindle is a rotary head, which can rotate 360 degrees around the Z axis, it isdefined C asix. There is A axis of the rotary head that can rotate around the Xaxis, which can generally reach more than ± 90 degrees to achieve the samefunction as above. Another advantage is that: when we use a spherical millingcutter to process curved surface, when the center line of the tool is verticalto the machining surface, because the vertex linear velocity of the sphericalmilling cutter is zero, the surface quality of the workpiece cut by the vertexwill be very poor. The design of spindle rotation makes the spindle rotatethrough an angle with respect to the workpiece, so that the spherical millingcutter can avoid the apex cutting, guarantee a certain linear speed, andimprove the surface processing quality. This structure is very popular withhigh-precision surface machining of the molds, which is difficult to achieve withthe rotary machining center of the worktable. In order to achievehigh-precision rotation, the high-end rotary shaft is also equipped withcircular scale feedback, and the indexing accuracy is within a few seconds. Ofcourse, the rotary structure of this spindle is more complicated and itsmanufacturing cost is much higher.
